When it comes to a man’s relationship with his woman, few can beat Edith Cavell, wife of the late journalist Robert Cavell. Born in 1839 in the tiny village of Wittenberg, Pennsylvania, and brought up in a small city in upstate New York – she went to boarding school in Philadelphia – Cavell was the kind of woman who was always ready to laugh and be funny, or blow a kiss and ask, “What’s the matter with you, Doc?” as the story goes. When Cavell died of cancer in 1929, it was thought to be terminal, but it was not until two years later that a biographer discovered that the cause was not terminal but fatal. The discovery of her illness changed the course of Cavell’s life. A lifelong bachelor, she never married and was thought to be in her fifties when she died.
