Robots that imitate the movement of grasshoppers have been made possible due to an advanced latch control system.

Sarah Bergbreiter, a professor of Mechanical Engineering, has discovered that robots can jump across different terrains such as grass and sand. Researchers do not need to look far to find a way to make this a reality, as existing latch mechanisms can be used to regulate the jumping ability of the robots across a number of grounds. These same latch mechanisms, which have previously been used as ‘on or off’ switches to store energy, can now be employed for this purpose.
